Updates
Aspen Valley Hospital (AVH) Status now Concerning (RED)
Following consultation between Aspen Valley Hospital (AVH), its physician leaders, and Pitkin County Public Health, AVH has changed their overall capacity status from cautious (yellow) to concerning (red). This is a result of essential healthcare workers out (ill with COVID) and average daily visits being in the concerning level.
AVH has been experiencing staff illness rates related to COVID in excess of 10% for the past several days. AVH is monitoring its staffing levels and will make operational adjustments as needed to protect capacity for essential services, such as emergencies and traumas.
The increase in visits to all AVH locations/clinics is due to the Omicron surge as well as some primary care physicians not doing in-person visits. Fortunately the cases are predominantly mild especially for patients that are vaccinated and boosted.
AVH and its physicians strongly encourage community members to double-down on proven protective measures including vaccinations/boosters, masking, avoiding large gatherings, and social distancing. By doing so, community members can protect themselves, their families, and the hospital’s capacity so we can keep our community open.

Boosters Approval for 12-15 year olds
The Food and Drug Administration and the CDC approved a Pfizer-BioNTech Covid-19 booster dose for children ages 12 to 15. The FDA also shortened the timing of Pfizer’s booster shots from six months to five months after the initial series of shots. There was also an approval for boosters for 5-11 year olds that are severely immunocompromised. These individuals should contact their doctor and/or care teams to discuss if an additional dose would be optimal for their condition.
